Thousands of acres of national park are burning this evening in Killarney as fire crews, national park personnel, and an army helicopter desperately try to contain the huge fire on the southern and western edges of Killarney National Park.
Civil Defence and Gardaí were also at the scene which runs for miles along the N71 as astonished onlookers gathered to watch clouds of white smoke billow at the top of Purple and Shehy Mountain.

A huge fire which broke out in Killarney National Park on Saturday has seen the army helicopter called in to assist the fire servi, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Kerry County Council to battle the blaze.
The fire which broke out at midnight has been fanned by a strong breeze and concern is mounting among exhausted fire fighters about the park’s ancient oakwoods in area near Eagle’s Nest.
