Congressman Roger Williams hosts community roundtable discussing community input surrounding Fort Hood

FORT HOOD, TX â Congressman Roger Williams, held a press conference after a community round table unpacking the challenges at Ft. Hood. Local elected officials, military veterans, and law enforcement officers were all invited to be part of the discussion.
The group tackled everything from sexual assault and the #IAMVANESSAGUILLEN legislation, to housing on post, and issues facing hundreds of veterans every day.
Ft. Hood and the City of Killeen were catapulted into the spotlight after the murder of Vanessa Guillen. Leaders at the round table said there has been input and support for changes at Fort Hood coming from all across the country.
The local League of United Latin American Citizens put on the candlelight vigil around 6 p.m. Thursday.
AnaLuisa Tapia, director of District 17 for the League of United Latin American Citizens, spoke during the vigil along with several other guest speakers, including Killeen Mayor Jose Segarra.
âWe are here today to honor the life of our soldier, our own Vanessa Guillen,â Tapia said to the crowd before opening the celebration in prayer.
Segarra spoke with a heavy heart on the impact of Guillen and how the city and its residents will continue to remember her and honor her.

Today marks one year since former Fort Hood soldier, Spc. Vanessa Guillen, was last seen alive.
On April 24, 2020, Fort Hood officials sent the initial news release of her disappearance, saying that she had last been seen around 1 p.m. April 22, 2020.
In the following days, weeks and months, details surrounding her disappearance, and subsequent grisly end, began to surface.
During a press conference on June 23, 2020, following a meeting with Fort Hood officials, U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, said that Fort Hood officials told Guillenâs family that a supervisor who was conducting barracks checks that day submitted a report that all soldiers had been accounted for, but he had since admitted that he did not see Guillen.

A new member of the Bell County Tax Appraisal District board of directors was unanimously approved by the Killeen city council during Tuesdayâs meeting.
Dick Young, a former Killeen city councilman and a former member of the board for the Bell County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1, was nominated by the Killeen City Council on Feb. 2 during a workshop meeting of the council.
Young will be replacing Royce Matkin, who died in early January from complications related to COVID-19.
Also during that workshop meeting, Otis Evans, the only other applicant for the seat, was nominated but did not receive the majority of the votes that Young received from the council, according to Killeen Mayor Jose Segarra.
