Wrestling: Huskers Finish 3rd at Big Tens

Wrestling: Huskers Finish 3rd at Big Tens Share this story Jon Johnston / Corn Nation After a strong Session I and Session II on Saturday, the No. 8 Nebraska wrestling team had a rather disappointing Day 2 at the 2021 Big Ten Championships. With three wrestlers into the finals in 7-seed Ridge Lovett (149 pounds), 6-seed Taylor Venz (184) and 1-seed Eric Schultz (197), the Huskers started off strong in the consolation bracket with multiple wins putting them in position for another run at second place. But it was to no avail as the Huskers lost all three of their matchups in the finals. Two matches were against No. 1 seeds, while the other against No. 2. In fact, nine No. 1 seeds won their weight class on Sunday with Schultz being the lone top seed to lose in the finals.

Wrestling: Sammy Sasso Wins Big Ten Championship As Five Buckeyes Earn Automatic Bids to the NCAA Tournament

Sammy Sasso was a single takedown away from winning the Big Ten Championship as a redshirt freshman, dropping a 2-1 classic to Iowa s Pat Lugo a year ago. The sport s Freshman of the Year had a fantastic season, and until COVID scuttled everything  appeared on track to challenge Lugo for an NCAA title. That match, of course, never happened. But after the strangest offseason in memory, Sasso entered a condensed Big Ten season poised to be the man to beat in 2021. And he s lived up to the billing every step of the way, winning the 149-pound Big Ten Championship Sunday in State College, Penn., defeating Nebraska s Ridge Lovett in a 5-2 decision.

Photo by Hunter Martin/Getty Images Minnesota Golden Gophers heavyweight wrestler Gable Steveson continued his tear through the Big Ten and won his second consecutive Big Ten Heavyweight wrestling championship on Sunday over Michigan’s Mason Parris 12-4. He becomes the first Gopher to win multiple Big Ten Championships since heavyweight Tony Nelson did it three times between 2012-2014. Steveson received a bye into the quarterfinals on Saturday and faced #8 Tate Orndorff of Ohio State where he easily earned a win via technical fall 19-4 in the second period. He was set to face #5 Christian Lance of Nebraska in the semifinals, but Lance took a medical forfeit to advance Steveson into the finals.
