Solar could deliver 76 per cent of global energy needs, new study says

15 April 2021 Solar PV will emerge as the major energy supplier by the middle of the century, generating as much as 76% of global electricity demand which will include the transport and heat sectors, according to a new study. Researchers at LUT University in Finland have been working on a global energy system transition model which has modelled out 100% renewable electricity futures for large swathes of the planet. As the LUT researchers have continued to work on their model, they have continued to refine it’s projections, and this week the team, led by Christian Breyer, Professor of Solar Economy at LUT, published what they are describing as “the only known cost-neutral energy system transition scenario that meets the 1.5°C climate target set in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.”

47 Scientists: World Should Go 100% Renewable Electricity By 2030 - Governors' Wind Energy Coalition

Governors Wind Energy Coalition 47 Scientists: World Should Go 100% Renewable Electricity By 2030 Source: By Zachary Shahan, CleanTech • Posted: Monday, April 12, 2021 And 100% renewable energy no later than 2035. There are a lot of announcements out there from countries and companies regarding increasing renewable energy adoption and reducing emissions. A recent article in the journal Nature pointed out that they are often too vague and vary quite a lot. The authors recommended clarifying scope and a long-term roadmap, among other things. 47 other scientists in this realm have made that a little easier for any leaders with a modest amount of courage and ambition. They say that countries and companies can and should aim for 100% renewable electricity no later than 2030, and 100% renewable energy (covering other sectors beyond electricity) by 2035.

IRENA renewable energy study finds hitting 1.5 degree climate target will create jobs

news IRENA renewable energy study finds hitting 1.5 degree climate target will create jobs dw.com 16/03/2021 Gero Rueter The world already has technologies to bring net emissions in the energy system down to zero and doing so will boost employment, said researchers. © Song Weixing/HPIC/dpa/picture alliance Solar panels have become so cheap experts project they will produce the bulk of electricity by 2050, along with wind turbines Proven technologies for a net-zero energy system already largely exist today, according to a report published Tuesday by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). It predicts that renewable power, green hydrogen and modern bioenergy will shape the way we power the world in 2050.
