Job security -  even the clergy

Jobs disappear, different jobs are created – how safe are these jobs. The Sydney Morning Herald recently ran this story. It lists a wide variety of occupations that are under threat and a host that are relativity secure. The article cites Professor Roy Green, Dean of the University of Technology Sydney business school, who says many Australian jobs are being off-shored, automated and devalued by low-cost competition. We are going to see some very big changes, Green says. Obviously, as jobs get destroyed, others get created. We have all seen this process in place for some years and it is getting more pronounced.

A recent article in The Conversation discussed the claim that restaurants were closing on Sundays due to the huge 200% mark-up of penalty rates in employing people. The claim was made on Q&A 5 years ago by then Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg (now the treasurer). This was the quote: Now, what the Productivity Commission has said is when it comes to Sunday penalty rates, they are being prohibitive, about at 200% sometimes of the base wage and the feedback from businesses is that they re not opening because of those prohibitive costs. We ve got a particular problem that a lot of cafes, restaurants are closing because of the high prohibitive costs on a Sunday. – Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg,

AIS Chaplain – Special Years

In 1991 Dr Mark Tronson appointed me as Chaplain at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) replacing the inaugural chaplain Reverend Ken Bond who was moving. These continuing 23 years (2019) have been a highlight of my ministry with a non-churched community. Very few ministers have such an opportunity which has been enormously beneficial to me and I trust to those whom I ve served in elite sport. I ve always had an interest in sport as sport is a microcosm of life and having been a foundation Panellist and now solely a Sport Panellist, I have taken a great interest in their articles as they speak not only of sport but of life and experiencing another aspect entirely - a national sub-culture. I enjoy understanding what the sport writers convey to the reader.

The big clean up

Photo  -  Shell Bowser We do a major clean up every few years – what, in Australia refer to as a spring clean regardless of what time of year it is. A recent News.com article reveals the story of a couple who realised they had way too much stuff - they had spent over-the-top on clothes, had a reality check, got rid of it all except the bare essentials and went walking. Giving away about $10,000 worth of stuff to reduce her possessions to a box of sentimental mementos and a backpack of clothes, writer Erin Van Der Meer, 27 says the experience was liberating and when she eventually resettles into a more permanent lifestyle, she ll approach furniture, fashion and other belongings differently.
