JEREMY CORBYN lost a bid today to force the disclosure of Labour documents ahead of his forthcoming High Court challenge to his suspension from the parliamentary party. The former leader had applied for a “pre-action disclosure” ahead of potential legal action against Labour general secretary David Evans in order win the documents’ release. The Islington North MP’s legal team sought the documents in the belief that they could prove that a deal had been agreed on his readmission to the party, before his successor Sir Keir Starmer refused to restore the parliamentary whip to him. Mr Corbyn is considering legal action over his suspension from the parliamentary party, which could see him seek “an injunction to restore the whip immediately.”

The former leader of the opposition is considering suing the party over his suspension from the PLP, which his lawyers say is unlawful and the result of “political interference”. His lawyers sought “pre-action disclosure” of the minutes of a meeting at which Mr Corbyn claims the party agreed to reinstate him “at all levels”. They also asked for any communications between fellow Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge – or Marie van der Zyl, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews – and Mr Corbyn’s successor Sir Keir Starmer.

The former Labour leader’s lawyers believed the documents would help him show that an agreement to fully readmit him to the party following his suspension for downplaying antisemitism under his leadership had been reneged upon. Labour has denied in court that any such deal existed. In a ruling on Wednesday, the judge Lisa Sullivan dismissed Corbyn’s claim, saying he already had sufficient information upon which to decide whether or not to bring a case.
