Local Democrats have chosen a retired veterinarian Saturday to face-off against Republican candidate Christopher Gebhard in the May 18 special election for the vacant 48th Senate District seat.
Dr. Calvin Doc Clements, 70, of South Londonderry Township, was recommended by the executive committee Saturday night to be the party nominee. The 48th District includes Lebanon County and parts of York and Dauphin counties.
The party s state executive committee must approve Clements as the nominee. They are expected to meet Monday evening.

Four candidates are seeking to become the Democratic nominee in the race to fill the open 48th state senatorial district seat.
Committee people from Lebanon County and portions of Dauphin and York counties will meet on Saturday to decide who will receive the nomination from among Laura Quick, Dr. Calvin Clements, and Ralph Duquette, all of Lebanon County, and Sandra Thompson of York County.
The chosen nominee will go on to compete against Republican Christopher Gebhard of Lebanon County, Libertarian Tim McMaster of York County, and independent Ed Krebs of Lebanon County in the May 18 special election. That date coincides with the primary election.
