Tomas Conechny s departure: Unfulfilled promise, and now Spring questions

Tomas Conechny’s departure: Unfulfilled promise, and now Spring questions Share this story Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports The tale of Argentinian players on the Portland Timbers is very much a hot and cold story. For every Diego Valeri, there is a Gaston Fernandez. For every Sebastian Blanco, there is a Lucas Melano (who somehow got two chapters in this story). It seems that for every player from the South American country that transfers in that hits and becomes a star, there is another player who fizzles and never hits the heights expected of them. Tomas Conechny is the latest player to encompass the latter, and fulfill that unfortunate outcome.

Five Free Agents that could help the Portland Timbers in 2021 Share this story Photo by Nick Tre. Smith/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images MLS free agency officially opened for business last week, so teams have been allowed to talk with the many players who qualify as free agents in the league. Eligible players must be at least 24 years old, have five years of MLS service, and be either out of contract or have had their options declined. The Portland Timbers’ history with free agency has been all of two players: Ned Grabavoy (played one season, retired, now Portland’s technical director) and Chance Myers (played 44 minutes, retired, now a scout for Nashville SC), and they haven’t made a free agent signing since 2017. They are a team that usually looks abroad to find players.

Six Degrees: Final Report Cards

Six Degrees: Final Report Cards Share this story Photo by Brian Murphy/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images 1) In October, I handed out my midterm report cards, which you can read here. Now it’s time for final grades. Who brought their grade up, who saw it slip, and who might be damn nervous showing this to their parents? Here’s my grading system: A – well above the average MLS player at their position B – above average 2) Strikers and Wingers Jeremy Ebobisse – midterm grade: A – final grade: A- – Jebo tied for the team lead in goals, and until that late-season concussion, was one of the only sure things on the team. Plus, he put up numbers from both the striker and winger positions. He’s the real deal. Seems like only a matter of time before some European club makes us a Godfather offer.
