The Norwood Police Department has partnered with two other law enforcement agencies and local school administrators on a national program in Northern New York designed to provide resources to children who may have endured recent trauma.
Norwood-Norfolk Central School District has worked with the Norfolk Police Department and St. Lawrence County Sheriffâs Office on the Handle With Care program. If police officers respond to a potentially traumatic situation involving a student, they would pass the childâs name to the district. School authorities could then make counseling services ready if needed, according to a model of the program in effect in various regions the country.
NORFOLK â The Norwood Police Department has joined with the Norfolk Police Department and St. Lawrence County Sheriffâs Office for a program that alerts Norwood-Norfolk Central School officials to any incident that may have impacted a student at home.
The âHandle With Careâ program allows school officials to know that the involved children might be dealing with trauma or other issues the next day and may need to be handled with care.
If a police officer responds to a home and a school-aged child is present, they send Superintendent James Cruikshank an email with the childâs name.
âNothing else, no details, just a message to Handle with Care. This provides us with the knowledge that a child may not be feeling themselves the next day, and we can approach any behaviors with care,â he said.
MASSENA â A survey is underway in the Massena Central School District to get more information from families about their participation in the school meal program.
The survey is being done as part of a Nutrition Hubs grant received by the district. Among the districtâs objectives are to improve the school lunch program and increase student participation in the school meal program by 25% by November, and they need feedback from district parents and guardians to help with the effort.
âThe big goal for the school will be to increase participation in the USDA lunch program the rest of this year and also increase our participation in our free and reduced lunch program for next year,â Community Schools Director Kristin Colarusso-Martin told Board of Education members in January.
