Portland State University Will Require COVID-19 Vaccinations This Fall

Updated May 5 Two prominent Oregon public universities will now require students and staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 this fall. Portland State University’s announcement came Wednesday, and Oregon State University announced it Tuesday evening. PSU president Stephen Percy sent out a letter stating that a personal exemption will be accepted, until one of the vaccines is fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration. One can opt out for medical or religious reasons as well. To help distribute more vaccines, both PSU and OSU are hosting clinics. “Widespread vaccination is our clearest and best path toward that future. The COVID-19 vaccines have been proven safe and effective in preventing the spread of the coronavirus, and PSU is committed to being a partner in the public health of our region,” Percy wrote.

U S News & World Report ranks Arkansas high schools

U.S. News & World Report ranks Arkansas high schools Fort Smith Times Record The U.S. News & World Report yearly ranks high schools throughout the nation. This year, the organization ranked Haas Hall Academy in Fayetteville as the best high school in the state out of 294 Arkansas high schools. The outlet published its results April 27. Here s a list compiling how well high schools in the area did. Greenwood  Ranked #16 At Greenwood High School, 35% of the students took at least one AP exam, and 21% of those students passed at least one test. The graduation rate at the school is greater than 95%, and the U.S News & World Report found the school s reading proficiency to be 53% and its mathematics proficiency to be 52%.

Kansas City-based Entrepreneur Business Basics coming to Topeka area

An entrepreneurship course that has proven its worth in the Kansas City area is coming to Topeka this summer. Kira Cheree, owner of Entrepreneur Business Basics, recently announced she is bringing her 12-week entrepreneur course, which is designed to help business owners of color, to Topeka and there is still time to apply. Cheree said she founded Entrepreneur Business Basics in 2014 and began her work by offering one-day workshops. It came out of a need to provide technical assistance to entrepreneurs of color, really just seeing the gaps and the deficit and the disparities, she said. African-American entrepreneurs really did not have the solid structure for their businesses to grow and sustain.
