(MURFREESBORO) For the 25th consecutive year, a stellar group of unsung heroes is slated to be honored at MTSU’s 2021 Unity Celebration, held virtually this year as part of the university’s annual Black History Month activities.
In this year’s renamed online recognition that substitutes for the annual on-campus Unity Luncheon due to COVID-19, the five honorees will be applauded during a special online broadcast beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, on the university’s Facebook and YouTube channels. The ceremony can be accessed at http://facebook.com/ mtsublueraiders and http://youtube.com/mtsunews, respectively.
Harvard University Dining Services workers who were laid off after HUDS closed facilities last month received the option to shift into new roles beginning Jan. 27, on seniority in an internal reshuffling process known as âbumping.â
Twenty HUDS workers are looking for new positions after the University closed four units, including the Culinary Support Group kitchen, which produced soups, sauces, salads, and pastas for the entire campus. Those workers can choose to either take an open position or âbumpâ a less senior HUDS employee out of their position and take their job, according to a procedure laid out in the contract between Harvard and UNITE HERE Local 26, which represents the Universityâs dining workers.
Genetic changes linked to neurodevelopmental disabilities, cerebral palsy
Researchers have discovered a strong link between genetic changes known to cause neurodevelopmental disabilities and cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy affects movement and posture and often co-occurs with other neurodevelopmental disorders, including intellectual disability, epilepsy and autism spectrum disorder. Individual cases of cerebral palsy are often attributed to birth asphyxia, although recent studies indicate that asphyxia accounts for less than 10% of cases. A growing body of research indicates that cerebral palsy may be caused by genetic changes, as is the case in other neurodevelopmental disorders.
The research team, which included investigators from Geisinger and GeneDx Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of BioReference Laboratories Inc., an OPKO Health company and global leader in genetic diagnostics, studied the DNA sequence of 1,526 children and adults with cerebral palsy.
