When the 2020-21 NCAA women’s gymnastics championships kick off Friday morning in Fort Worth, Texas, more than a few noteworthy competitors will be people of color.
When healthy, Florida’s Trinity Thomas is inarguably the best gymnast competing at the collegiate level. Denver’s Lynnzee Brown triggered the rise of the Pioneers’ program and will be competing for the all-around title. Michigan’s Sierra Brooks, LSU’s Haleigh Bryant, Minnesota’s Mya Hooten, Alabama’s Luisa Blanco, Utah’s Cristal Isa and Cal’s Kyana George each are vital contributors on title-contending teams. And who can forget UCLA’s Chae Campbell and Nia Dennis, both of whom have had performances on floor go viral on social media this year.

Utah gymnastics has made history. Again.
The Red Rocks are headed to nationals for a record 45th time, after winning the Salt Lake City regional Saturday night in West Valley City.
Utah didn’t just win the regional final, though. The Red Rocks put on a show inside the Maverik Center. Utah scored a season-high 197.925, saving their best performance of the year for their final competition in Utah.
WEST VALLEY CITY The last time the Red Rocks were in the regionals, a 2019 appearance in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it was top-seeded LSU that came out on top to win the event.
But on Saturday, with the Red Rocks getting an opportunity to sleep in their own bed and with LSU in their own territory, it was Utah s night to claim the top prize.
The No. 6-seeded Red Rocks were unstoppable and never trailed as they recorded a season-high 197.925 to edge out the top-seeded No. 3 LSU Tigers (197.750) Saturday night in the Salt Lake City Regional at the Maverik Center. The two teams edged out No. 11 Arizona State (197.600) and No. 14 Kentucky (197.600) to advance to nationals.
