Deadly day for SAPS: Six young officers killed in tragic circumstances
SAPS officials have been left reeling this week, after six members of the force died in separate accidents across one 24-hour period this week.
SAPS officers killed on-duty
Four members were killed in a car crash in the Chris Hani District, whereas two other serving officers were knocked down by a vehicle as they were investigating an accident scene in KZN for clues. SAPS confirmed the deaths – which all took place on Monday 26 April – via a statement issued earlier this evening:
“In the Eastern Cape, four members were travelling back home on Sunday from the Chris Hani District where they were part of a SAPS team that were deployed to the area to conduct crime prevention and awareness campaigns. The four were killed instantly following a collision between the police vehicle they were travelling in and a truck near Engcobo.”

A case of culpable homicide has been opened after four police officers and a civilian were killed in a car accident outside Engcobo, in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday.
The officers were returning from crime prevention operations in the Chris Hani District when the incident happened. It is unclear what led to the incident, and police believe the civilian was travelling in the car with the officers when the incident occurred. The deceased members aged between 25 and 35 were stationed at the Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo districts respectively, and they include three males, one female who is a Public Service Act member and one civilian person, said Saps spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.
