UArizona Plans for In-Person Commencement Ceremonies, Fall Classes

(Photo: Chris Richards/University of Arizona) The University of Arizona plans to celebrate graduates with a series of in-person ceremonies in May, President Robert C. Robbins announced Monday. He also said the university plans to offer most classes fully in person in the fall 2021 semester, which starts Aug. 23.  The in-person Commencement ceremonies, tentatively scheduled to take place between May 11 and May 18 at Arizona Stadium, would be smaller than the typical university-wide Commencement ceremony, with only about 1,000 students per ceremony, Robbins said. As currently envisioned, the ceremonies will include students only and will be streamed live and recorded to allow family and friends to participate remotely, he said.

Study Explores COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness

Chris Richards/University of Arizona To better understand the complexities of the immune response to the novel coronavirus and evaluate the viral immunity of Arizona essential workers, a University of Arizona Health Sciences research team has been conducting a COVID-19 study since last summer called the Arizona Healthcare, Emergency Response, and Other Essential Workers Surveillance study, or AZ HEROES.  The team recently expanded its efforts to look at how well COVID-19 vaccines are working to provide lasting immunity for high-risk populations. The first iteration of AZ HEROES was launched by researchers in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and the College of Medicine – Tucson to test immunity in essential workers – health care workers, first responders and other frontline workers – across Arizona.
