Affordable housing funding narrowly passes County Board (7/30/2021)
Even after a tax increase was stripped from the proposed budget for a Winona County agency that provides disadvantaged people with housing, the ask was still too much for some County Board members.
The board voted 3-2 Tuesday to preliminarily approve funding the county’s portion of Southeastern Minnesota Multi-County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (SEMMCHRA). County Board members Steve Jacob and Marcia Ward voted against the budget request, while Greg Olson, Chris Meyer, and Marie Kovecsi voted in favor.
SEMMCHRA Executive Director Buffy Beranek asked the board to raise the organization’s budget for the first time since 2013. For eight years, the county has kept SEMMCHRA’s allocation flat at $100,000.
