Songwriter who caught Lyme disease on Oxfordshire farm raises awareness through music

A FORMER teacher who was diagnosed with Lyme disease is now raising awareness for the illness by creating songs of hope. Demetrios Loukas, 50, was completing his teacher training at Oxford Brookes in 2005 when he was bitten by a tick on a farm. The trainee teacher had been taking his class from a Banbury primary school on a school trip to a West Oxfordshire farm. Mr Loukas became extremely ill shortly after the incident, however, it took eight years for him to be formally diagnosed with the disease. The former teacher turned music artist now hopes his album ‘The Lyme Years’ will help raise awareness for the illness and have a positive impact on how Lyme disease is tested for in the UK.

Monday, January 18, 2021 7:53 AM Huntington County Sheriff Chris Newton has announced that the Indiana Sheriff’s Association will again be awarding college scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students who are pursuing a degree in criminal justice studies. There will be approximately 40 of the $750 scholarships awarded to qualifying students around the state. To qualify for one of these scholarships, the applicant must be an Indiana resident, be a current member of the association or a dependent child or grandchild of a current member of the association, attend an Indiana college or university, major in a law enforcement field and enroll as a full-time student with 12 or more credit hours.

Oneida County Board of Legislators debates CNYSPCA services

The Oneida County Board of Legislators held an extended debate Wednesday during committee about entering into a $105,951 one-year contract with the Central New York Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CNYSPCA), which mirrored a similar debate on rescinding humane society grants in May. Legislators argued that taxpayer money should not be spent in this way and would be better spent in other areas during the pandemic in both cases. The majority of Wednesday’s debate took place during a Ways and Means Committee meeting that preceded the full board meeting. Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol and Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara called into the meeting to answer questions.

Todd County Man Charged In Fatal October Hunting Accident Arrested

A Sharon Grove man charged in connection to a Hopkinsville man’s death during a fall hunting accident was arrested Sunday afternoon. The Christian County Grand Jury indicted Julian Newton Jr. Friday on charges of second-degree manslaughter, first-degree wanton endangerment, taking wildlife from a vehicle, and illegal taking of a deer. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife investigated the incident that occurred on McKinney Road on October 18. Officials said Newton had thought Charles Newton and his wife had already left the area when he shot what he thought was a deer. They add he was using a muzzleloader and hunting from his vehicle in a field.
