Biden Orders Investigation of Kaseya Ransomware Attack

U.S. President Joe Biden has ordered federal intelligence agencies to investigate the incident involving IT management software vendor Kaseya, which sustained a suspected REvil ransomware attack on Friday. Attackers reportedly compromised Kaseya s remote monitoring system, VSA, forcing the company to urge its managed service provider customers to temporarily shut down their on-premise servers for at least for the next 24 to 48 hours.
Kaseya VSA is a remote management platform for MSPs that provides solutions such as automated patch management. According to Kaseya, the platform has been used by more than 36,000 MSP customers worldwide.
In the statement, Kaseya said the tool offers to monitor and manage servers, desktops, network devices and printers and that it may have been attacked. Such an attack can be particularly insidious to address, said Chris Grove, a security expert at the cybersecurity firm Nozomi Networks.
“Once a breach happens, the victim would generally reach for these tools to work their way out of a bad situation, but when the tool itself is the problem, or is unavailable, it adds complexity to the recovery efforts,” he said.
After the incident, Kaseya said “a small number of on-premise customers” had potentially been affected. The company said it had shut down some of its infrastructure and was urging customers that used the tool on their premises to immediately turn off their servers.

CHENEY, Wash. After opening and operating for just two days, the Cheney Municipal Pool experienced a catastrophic failure with the pump, motor and shaft in the filtration system and is beyond repair, forcing it to close.
Cheney Parks and Rec said on its Facebook page that on Sunday morning, staff arrived to see the system was not operational. Initially, it was thought to be a broken pipe, but further examination revealed that the damage was worse than what they expected.
“While we had hoped to be able to repair the damage to open the pool for another season, it was not meant to be,” they said on their Facebook page, adding that they have decided to close the pool.
