House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections.
McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class.
For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced Friday that he is opposed to the confirmation of Neera Tanden to lead the The Office of Management and Budget.
In a statement, Manchin said that the “overtly partisan” statements that Tanden had made about lawmakers on both sides of the aisle would have a “toxic and detrimental impact” on her ability to work with Congress in the role.

Manchin’s “no” vote is likely to tank her nomination. As soon as then-President-elect Biden announced her as his pick to led the powerful but wonky agency, Republicans signaled their intent to line up against her confirmation. Some even floated not giving her a confirmation hearing.

HOUSTON – U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) told U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Thursday there is “no common ground” to work together legislatively after his “role” in the Capitol riot earlier this month and urged him to resign.
“You almost had me murdered 3 weeks ago so you can sit this one out,” part of a tweet by Ocasio-Cortez read. “Happy to work w/ almost any other GOP that aren’t trying to get me killed. In the meantime if you want to help, you can resign.”
