For John Archibald, it began with silence. What he describes as “white silence.” The Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist for Alabama Media Group writes of the deafening silence from the pulpits of white churches in his 320-page biographical memoir, “Shaking the Gates of Hell: A Search for Family and Truth in the Wake of the Civil Rights Revolution.” Available on March 9, Archibald’s book tells of “an all-American white boy, son of a long line of Methodist preachers, in the midst of the Civil Rights revolution and discovering the culpability of silence within the church,” according to promotional material. But the No. 23 Golden Eagles have something that the No. 16 Gamecocks don’t. JSU lacks a game under its belt going into Sunday’s 3 p.m. meeting on Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium. Jacksonville State was to have opened its spring campaign with a trip to Tennessee State, but that game was postponed until next week. Meanwhile, Tech was getting its spring sea legs with a 27-21 victory over defending Ohio Valley Conference champ Austin Peay.

There have been countless tests for the novel coronavirus, cancellations, opt-outs and football games being played in the spring. But Alabama A&M coach Connell Maynor said his Bulldogs expect to play to their regular standard when they kick off their season on Saturday, March 6 at Mississippi Valley State. “Our goal is winning our division, getting in the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) Championship Game, winning the SWAC Championship and if they have a Celebration Bowl, get there and represent SWAC and win that,” he said in an interview with Alabama NewsCenter. “It hasn’t changed for us. If we’re gonna play games, we’re gonna play to win. We’re gonna try to win every game we play, taking them one at a time.
