Rick Pitino is back in the NCAA Tournament – with a mid-major team

USA TODAY Hall of Fame men s basketball coach Rick Pitino is heading back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since he lost his high-profile job at Louisville four years ago.  Pitino, now the head coach at Iona, piloted the Gaels (12-5) to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Tournament final victory, defeating Fairfield 60-51 on Saturday to receive the MAAC s automatic bid and be among the 68 teams set to play in Indianapolis next week.   Iona finished in third place in the regular season, going 6-3 in league play. The Gaels had more than a month of postponements due to COVID-19, not playing all of January. Pitino was one of the outspoken coaches critical of the NCAA for starting the season in late November amid the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Olympiacos scrape through to Greek Cup semi finals

5 March 2021 12:38pm It was a blockbuster quarter final as PAS Giannina rocked Panathinaikos for a second time, knocking the Greens out of the Greek Cup, whilst Olympiacos only just made it through with an aggregate 3-2 leaving Aris behind in the dust. PAS Giannina started off its victory with a 2-1 win over Panathinaikos in last month’s home leg, before heading to Athens to replicate the score. The first two goals were swiped in the first 10 minutes of the game with Epaminondas Pantelakis scoring in the second minute, before an own goal by Ilias Chatzitheodoridis put the Greens behind by two goals. The only solace for Panathinaikos was a goal scored by Achilleas Poungouras in 74th minute.
