Talks Between Greece and Turkey Resume After Five Years

Talks between Greece and Turkey, described as “exploratory contacts”, resumed on Monday in Istanbul, after almost five years.
Turkish Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin, a close associate of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is also taking part in the talks between diplomats from both sides.
Greece and Turkey will try to find points of convergence for possible future negotiations regarding the delimitation of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, based on international law.

LOS ANGELES – The Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles, the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture, and Los Angeles Greek Film Festival announce a ten-day virtual event, Heritage and Memory: A Focus on Jewish Greece, to be held January 27-February 6 in honor of Greece’s upcoming Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). On March 1, Greece will assume the Presidency of this intergovernmental organization, which unites governments and experts to promote, advance and shape Holocaust education, research and remembrance.

Turkey is making an official offer to Greece to resume exploratory talks within January, the country’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Monday. Cavusolgu spoke of “unconditional” talks on all issues that have been discussed over the 60 rounds of talks held until 2016, when contacts were suspended.
Cavusoglu said Athens had “no excuse” not to resume talks.
He also referred to the Cyprus issue reiterating the position of Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for two states on the island.
“We will not allow the slaughter of Turkish Cypriots,” Cavusoglu added.
The Turkish FM also calls for a direct dialogue at political level between him and Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias.
Greek Foreign Ministry denies it received an invitation from Turkey to begin exploratory talks

Replying to a journalist’s question, a spokesperson of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandros Papaioannou stated the following:
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received no invitation so far from the Turkish Foreign Ministry on setting the date for the 61st round of exploratory contacts.
“Greece, as is well known, has expressed its willingness to respond, in case of a relevant invitation from the Turkish side, on the basis of International Law regarding the delimitation of the EEZ [Exclusive Economic Zone] and the continental shelf.”

Greece’s opposition party, SYRIZA, sent a letter expressing their content with the decision for La Trobe’s Greek program future, giving credit to the GOCMV and other diaspora organisations for the positive outcome.
The letter, signed by SYRIZA MP Rallia Christidou and addressed to Greek Community of Melbourne’s Education Officer, Theo Markou, reads as follows:

That we have received a reply by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the parliamentary scrutiny question I had submitted, along with 27 more MPs from SYRIZA, regarding the subsequent abolition of the Greek Studies Program of the La Trobe University (there is still a reply pending from the Greek Ministry of Education, though).
