Talks Between Greece and Turkey Resume After Five Years Exploratory talks between Greece and Turkey launched in Istanbul. Credit: Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs Talks between Greece and Turkey, described as “exploratory contacts”, resumed on Monday in Istanbul, after almost five years. Turkish Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin, a close associate of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is also taking part in the talks between diplomats from both sides. Greece and Turkey will try to find points of convergence for possible future negotiations regarding the delimitation of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, based on international law.

Turkey invites Greece to resume exploratory talks, unconditionally

Greek Foreign Ministry denies it received an invitation from Turkey to begin exploratory talks Search for: Replying to a journalist’s question, a spokesperson of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandros Papaioannou stated the following: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received no invitation so far from the Turkish Foreign Ministry on setting the date for the 61st round of exploratory contacts. “Greece, as is well known, has expressed its willingness to respond, in case of a relevant invitation from the Turkish side, on the basis of International Law regarding the delimitation of the EEZ [Exclusive Economic Zone] and the continental shelf.”

The letter, signed by SYRIZA MP Rallia Christidou and addressed to Greek Community of Melbourne’s Education Officer, Theo Markou, reads as follows: We are happy to inform you That we have received a reply by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the parliamentary scrutiny question I had submitted, along with 27 more MPs from SYRIZA, regarding the subsequent abolition of the Greek Studies Program of the La Trobe University (there is still a reply pending from the Greek Ministry of Education, though).
