Craig s Breeze Park honored with Starburst Award by state lottery

(Courtesy Photo / Craig Parks and Recreation) After years of investments into upgrading Breeze Park in Craig, the city received recognition from the Colorado Lottery April 21, earning one of 11 Starburst Awards for the fiscal year of 2021. The Colorado Lottery’s Starburst Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery funds for community and conservation projects, according to a press release from the lottery. In 2015, the city of Craig officially broke ground on the Breeze Park Phase I project, which included significant improvements to the park’s amenities and accessibility.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife to host guided bird-watching walks at Yampa River State Park

(Courtesy Photo / Colorado Parks and Wildlife) Eyeing a way to engage the community and provide an educational opportunity, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Ranger Tim Abt looks to the sky. Abt will host a guided bird-watching walk starting at 9 a.m each Saturday in May at Yampa River State Park just outside of Hayden along U.S. Highway 40. “I’ve been a pretty avid bird watcher my whole life,” Abt said. “This time of year you’re able to see so many species out here, so we’re at the point where we have to get interpretive programs on the books earlier before the summer gets too busy and we can’t have them.

Faculty Senate shows concern for athletics budget, ONEWSU

Faculty Senate members approved sending a letter of recommendation to the WSU Board of Regents raising concern about the 2021 athletics budget plan. Senators also expressed hesitation for the proposed WSU system restructuring called ONEWSU during a meeting Thursday. On Jan. 21, Senator Von Walden presented a one-page document calling the Board of Regents to reject the athletics department’s proposal for financial assistance of $2-3 million per year.  Since the meeting, over 200 faculty members signed the letter in support and provided comments on the Faculty Senate blog, Senate Chair David Turnbull said.  One senator asked if the committee thought about the “end game” of the request.

Ryan Dennison celebrates one year as Director of Craig Parks and Recreation

Parks and Rec Director Ryan Dennison sits at his desk busy at work, trying to make the parks system as great as it can be. (Max O’Neill / Craig Press) Nearly all of Craig Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Dennison’s tenure with the department has been under the shadow of the pandemic. That hasn’t stopped him from enjoying what he does, however. Dennison, who celebrates his one-year anniversary today, worked as the recreation director for five years before taking over the top position. Dennison fell in love with parks and rec while he was a sophomore at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.
