A doctoral candidate in the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Marine Biology Graduate Program, studying a potential coral-saving strategy, was named a recipient of the 2021 David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship by the Society for Conservation Biology and the Cedar Tree Foundation.
Shayle Matsuda will be part of a team of researchers engaging in an international coral reef restoration project. During the fellowship, he will assess how transplanting coral affects their health, specifically the symbiotic relationship between coral and their microbiomes.

THE partner of an adventurous and honest woman has been left in shock after her sudden death at just 39. Lisa Clark, described by her loving partner Craig Snelson as a bright star , in hospital after suffering an aneurysm. The 39-year-old factory worker had been at work when she fainted suddenly, Mr Snelson said. She had also developed a headache and was taken to the hospital to be checked out. The aneurysm was found but unfortunately it was in a place where it could not be operated upon. And just 48 hours later she passed away surrounded by her family. Mr Snelson said: “Lisa was the most honest person in the world. Honesty is all she ever wanted from people.

Garage sales are supposed to be about clearing clutter and making a few bucks in the process.
But, as Craig Nelson says, sometimes it’s just “so we can swap stuff from my closet for stuff from your closet.”
That’s exactly how it worked out for Nelson about 35 years ago when he held a garage sale at the home he then owned in San Carlos. And it is when Nelson came to own one of his most prized possessions an oil painting of Tony Gwynn.
“I had collected a fairly large stash of memorabilia, including game uniforms, bats and several hundred thousand baseball cards,” Nelson said. “Picking through the old lamps and miscellaneous junk, a neighbor said, ‘I see you are a collector would you be interested in a Tony Gwynn painting?’ ”
