Bridlewood Trails Workers Join CUPE
April 13, 2021 GMT
KANATA, Ontario (BUSINESS WIRE) Apr 13, 2021
Workers at Bridlewood Trails Retirement Community in Kanata voted almost unanimously today to join The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
“The pandemic has been very challenging for workers in retirement and long-term care residences. Thanks to COVID, everyone knows care workers need to be treated better and given more respect,” said Marc Lafrance, a CUPE representative who is involved in the organizing drive. “Now these workers have new rights and the backing of a strong union to help build a better, safer workplace for everyone.”
SALTILLO ⢠There could be a lot of new faces at Saltillo City Hall after Tuesday s elections.
Challenger Copey Grantham held a 16-vote lead over two-term incumbent Rex Smith Tuesday night in a mayoral race that was too close to call. The race could be settled Wednesday when affidavit ballots are counted.
In the race for aldermen, 14 candidates split the vote. Because of that, only three candidates got the mathematical majority needed to win a seat outright. The next four top vote-getters will face off in the April 27 runoff for the final two seats.
Grantham, a first-term aldermen, finished the night with 483 votes, compared to Smith s 467 votes. There are still 16 affidavit votes to count, as well as 6 absentee votes outstanding. The absentee ballots must be postmarked by election day and received at city hall within five days to be counted.
SALTILLO â¢Â Affidavit ballots trimmed Copey Granthamâs thin lead over two-term incumbent Rex Smith Wednesday afternoon, but they did not stop him from effectively winning Saltilloâs mayoral election.
With only six absentee ballots outstanding, Granthamâs 13 vote lead makes his victory mathematically certain as it currently stands.
Saltillo City Clerk Mary Parker has refused to call the election, however, on the advice of the Secretary of Stateâs office.
âBecause of the closeness of the race and the fact there are still outstanding ballots, the Secretary of Stateâs office said they would not call it,â Parker said.
She noted that someone could still contest the election or call for a recount.
SALTILLO ⢠Voters will decide who they want to lead the city of Saltillo â two-term incumbent mayor Rex Smith or first-term alderman Copey Grantham â when they go to the polls next Tuesday.Â
The voters will also pare down the list of 14 candidates vying to sit on the city s board of aldermen down to just five who will serve until 2025.
Since all candidates qualified as Republicans, all of the races will be decided in Tuesday s primary. There will be no run-offs.
Both mayoral candidates agree that infrastructure â particularly sewer and water improvements â should be high on the list for Saltillo s administration in the next four years.
The Quick family says it looks forward to the postcards arriving each week. “It gives you three different charities to choose from. And each one of us pick a charity that we would like to donate to,” says mom Vanessa.
The online platform not only puts generosity front and center, but Sanders says by picking charities at the dinner able, it allows families like the Quicks to discuss the charities, why they were chosen, and what the impact of their donations is.
Sanders says, “We use language like ’because of you and others like you’ to really drive home this concept that even small acts of kindness when combined can lead to big change.”
