Residents of a large northwest Gainesville neighborhood thought Thursday they might be preparing to further battle a proposed drive-thru business near their homes.
Instead, they re scratching their heads and wondering what an Atlanta developer will do next, after city officials gave a green light to a much larger and taller development than had been proposed.
Minus the drive-thru, which commissioners nixed Wednesday evening.
Suburban Heights residents were trying to digest the changes after Gainesville city commissioners unexpectedly approved a land-use change, drastically altering what could be built next to their neighborhood.
Seemingly out of nowhere, commissioners voted to allow a multistory, urban mixed-use development with commercial and retail businesses on the bottom floors and housing upstairs, including affordable units.

In Jacksonville, a pastor to more than 1,400 members leads the Jacksonville Safety and Crime Reduction Commission. The chair of the Dallas Community Police Oversight Board is a credit bureau reporting analyst who is also a writer, community activist and public speaker.
A private investor and former chairman of the local Boys and Girls Club heads the board of police commissioners in Kansas City, Missouri. In Columbus, Ohio, the community safety advisory commission is led by a former city attorney who is CEO of the local United Way.
