In their first discussion of the city’s 2022 budget, city leaders said they would like to keep the property tax rate flat and were interested in ways to mitigate the city’s rising utility rates.
As part of its study session Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission discussed 2021 revenue projections and directed staff regarding key policy questions that will affect the 2022 budget. Commissioners agreed that they did not want to increase the city’s property tax rate as part of the budget.
“I definitely want to leave the mill levy flat,” Mayor Brad Finkeldei said. “I think that’s a starting point.”

A task force of Lawrence residents that has been reconsidering the city’s form of government has come out in favor of having a directly elected mayor.
As part of its meeting Thursday evening, the City Government Study Task Force voted 7-0, with a few members absent, to recommend that the city consider changing to a directly elected mayor who serves a four-year term. Currently, the City Commission chooses one of its own members to serve a one-year term as mayor each year by tradition, commissioners choose based on whoever received the most votes in the most recent election, though there have been exceptions.

COBB COUNTY, GA A Cobb County Jail inmate is dead after he attempted suicide Wednesday, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be looking into the incident.
Detention center staff noticed the male detainee, whose name has not been released, did not respond to a 6:30 a.m. routine check-in Wednesday morning. Deputies immediately started CPR and called for an ambulance once they discovered him, according to a Thursday press release from the Cobb County Sheriff s Office.
