MEREDA annual forecast conference looks different, but focus is the same

The 2021 Annual MEREDA Forecast Conference & Member Showcase took on a different look this year, but with the same focus on its goals its had for the past 17 years, organizers said. The conference, which usually attracts more than 1,000 real estate and development professionals from across Maine, took to the internet Thursday, and while no final registration numbers were immediately available, with a week to go, 500 had registered. MEREDA Board President Josh Fifield acknowledged that no one would have to trudge through the snow to the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland to get to the conference. This year is different, he said. Riders anxious to get out on Maine s snowmobile trails

Read Article Members of the Norway Trackers Snowmobile Club snake through a trail in Bethel last February. Trails in Maine are quiet now because of a lack of snow, but riders are ready to bust out once the winter arrives in full force. Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer With Maine’s snowmobile trails closed because of a dearth of snow, the start of the 2020-21 snowmobile season is anyone’s guess. But when the snow does arrive, one thing is abundantly clear: Maine’s 14,000 miles of trails will be humming. Riders and club officials have many reasons to believe the state’s trail system – one of the largest in the country – will be as busy as ever this winter. Snowmobile sales are up at dealerships in Maine and across the nation. And with the Canadian border closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, riders will remain in Maine rather than heading farther north this winter. It’s setting up as an epic season.

Broadband divide widens as data demand puts pressure on networks

PIERS FULLER/Stuff Though Andy Kerr’s got good cellular reception at his rural Masterton property just out of town, the wireless broadband offered by the mainstream suppliers was not up to standard. The promise of connectivity on par with their urban neighbours is a distant dream for many rural people whose broadband performance is getting worse, not better. Masterton IT manager Andy Kerr found his wireless broadband connection so poor that it was unworkable at certain times of the day, so he dropped his contract and changed to a small local provider. He only lived a few kilometres from town with a strong cellular signal, and he believed the networks were under too much pressure from increased data use.
