Moscow:
Russian police detained top Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny at a Moscow airport on Sunday just minutes after he returned home for the first time since his poisoning last summer.
Navalny was detained at passport control at Moscow s Sheremetyevo airport less than an hour after he flew in from Berlin in defiance of warnings that he faced imminent arrest.
His detention prompted immediate condemnation from the European Union and calls for EU sanctions against Russia by Lithuania. The detainment of Alexey Navalny upon arrival in Moscow is unacceptable. I call on Russian authorities to immediately release him, European Council president Charles Michel wrote on Twitter.

Berlin [Germany], January 17 (ANI): Russia s leading opposition figure and chief Kremlin critic, Alexey Navalny on Sunday left for Moscow from Germany, five months after he was poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent.
The 2.5-hour flight by Russian carrier Pobeda took off from Berlin Brandenburg Airport and is due to land in Moscow s Vnukovo, which was heavily guarded by police on Sunday, reported CNN.
Navalny arrived in Germany five months ago in a coma after being poisoned by Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent developed by Russia during the Soviet years. Several Western officials along with Navalny himself have openly blamed Russia for the poisoning, while the Kremlin has denied the allegations.
