Manteca Unified resumes hybrid model amid soaring COVID-19 numbers

MANTECA – The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged students, parents, teachers and administrators in unimaginable ways. For 10 months, school districts around the country have navigated uncharted waters, balancing what they believe is best for students while trying to ensure their health and safety amid a global pandemic that continues to rage. Manteca Unified, the third largest public school district in San Joaquin County behind Stockton (41,679) and Lodi (31,400) with 24,000 students and about 3,000 staff members, according to the California Department of Education, started blended/hybrid learning on Nov. 2 when the county moved from the most restrictive purple tier to the red tier in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. In the red tier, the district did not need a waiver from San Joaquin County Public Health Services.

An Oak Bluffs man is being held on motor vehicle homicide charges after a head-on, two-vehicle collision on Beach Road Saturday night that resulted in the death of another driver and severe injuries to two other passengers. Zachary A. Dupon, 25, of Oak Bluffs has been charged with motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, speeding and marked lanes violation, according to a statement released early Sunday afternoon by state police spokesman David Procopio. On Monday morning, Mr. Dupon was arraigned before the Hon. Paul Pino on all three charges via polycom from the Edgartown house of correction. Bail was set at $12,000. A statement of facts was provided by assistant district attorney Matthew Palazollo, and arguments were also heard from Mr. Dupon’s defense attorney, Casey Dobel.

The Martha s Vineyard Times One driver killed, another charged in Tisbury collision Updated Dec. 20 at 1:15  Emma Hall, 22, of Oak Bluffs was killed Saturday night in a head-on collision at around 8 pm on Beach Road in Tisbury, according to a state police statement. Zachary Dupon, 25, of Oak Bluffs has been charged with motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, speeding, and marked lanes violation in relation to Hall’s death.  A preliminary investigation by state police indicates Dupon was behind the wheel of a 2002 Nissan SUV traveling southbound on Beach Road, state police spokesman Dave Procopio wrote in a press release. “According to the evidence, Dupon moved into the northbound lane to pass two southbound vehicles that were in front of him. Dupon passed the other vehicles and then, still going south the northbound lane, struck, head-on, a 2010 Volkswagen Beetle that was traveling northbound,” Procopio wrote.
