Local News: Council OKs sidewalk, bike path study (2/25/21)

Thursday, February 25, 2021 The Eureka Springs City Council is showing support for a proposal to add sidewalks and bike paths to Pivot Rock Road and East Mountain Street. On Monday night, council member LauraJo Smole presented the proposal. Smole suggested appointing a committee including planning commission members to conduct a feasibility study. From there, Smole said, the committee would present its findings to the council. Smole also suggested including a representative from the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission on the committee. There s possibilities that they have some monies we might be able to access, Smole said. Mayor Butch Berry said the CAPC can t spend money on bikes and paths. Smole asked if it would be OK if the paths connected the hotels and restaurants and Berry said no.

The Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission considered a motion to vacate the seat held by Greg Moon at its Jan. 27 meeting. Although then-commission chair Carol Wright declared the seat vacant after a roll call vote on the motion, she never actually voted yes or no. That left the vote count at 3-2-1 in favor of vacating the seat and left Moon’s status on the commission in question.

Thursday, February 4, 2021 The Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission isn’t currently hiring a special events coordinator. At the commission’s regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 27, a discussion about the 2021 budget ended with a motion to wait to hire a special events coordinator and to form a committee to address special events in the meantime. Commissioner Melissa Greene kicked off the discussion about the budget, saying the commission shouldn’t have approved its 2021 budget in November 2020. Tracy Johnson “I don’t think anybody did it maliciously. I don’t think presenting it was a bad thing,” Greene said. “It just should have waited to be approved.”

The commission agreed to hold a special meeting on Jan. 20 to discuss the events coordinator and Auditorium manager position, where Johnson s pay was a hot topic.
