Analysis ranks Alabama among top states for economic momentum amid recovery

Alabama ranks among the top states for economic momentum in a new analysis that evaluates key measurements of economic performance in 2021.
State Policy Reports, a publication based in Washington, D.C., ranked Alabama No. 8 in its Index of State Economic Momentum for the first quarter. The state’s score was 1.31, compared to a national average of zero.
Language calling homosexuality illegal and unacceptable will be struck from the state s laws on sex education under a measure signed by Gov. Kay Ivey this week.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, removes a paragraph dating from 1992 that requires courses on human reproduction and sexual education to emphasize that homosexuality is not a lifestyle acceptable to the general public and that homosexual conduct is a criminal offense under the laws of the state.
The bill passed the Alabama House 69 to 30 on March 2. It passed the Senate 18 to 6 on April 20. It will go into effect July 1.
In the Montgomery delegation, Reps. Reed Ingram, R-Pike Road; Kelvin Lawrence, D-Hayneville; Thad McClammy, D-Montgomery; Charlotte Meadows, R-Montgomery; Tashina Morris, D-Montgomery and Chris Sells, R-Greenville voted for the bill. In the Senate, Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road voted against the bill. Sen. Kirk Hatcher, D-Montgomery, voted for it.

The Alabama Innovation Commission continues to map opportunities to ensure the state has the right tools to grow and scale innovative businesses.
The commission’s two priority bills in the 2021 legislative session, the Alabama Innovation Corporation legislation (House Bill 540) and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) legislation (House Bill 609), passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday and will advance to the Senate.

The index ranks states based on their most recent performance in three important measures of economic vitality: personal income growth, employment growth and population growth.
Gov. Ivey said Alabamaâs ranking in the new report shows that the state is fully on the road to recovery after the widespread national economic disruptions triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
