More than 5,000 miles away from Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, the first-ever Olympic surfing competition will take place this weekend.Team U.S.A. will be represented by two men and two women who will ride the waves with 38 other competitors from around the world.Competitors will be riding the waves at Tsurigasaki Beach in Japan.Team U.S.A. is made up with Carrisa Moore, John John Florence, Caroline Marks and Kolohe Andino.As for the pressure, there s even a sports psychiatrist to help the team cope with the emotional tension once the games begin, said Greg Cruse, U.S.A. Surfing CEO. I think the biggest pressure was actually on surfing conditions. So, everyone says that Oh, it s a bad time of year for surfing in Japan, said Cruse. The forecast calls for bigger swells from a potential tropical storm forming South of Japan next week.Judges will be looking for speed, power, and flow from all 40 competitors.
