A 23-year-old violent offender who walked away from a residential treatment centre last summer, hopes a judge won’t make him serve several more months in custody.
The offender, who can’t be named because he was only 17 when he sexually assaulted a woman and cut her throat, is facing several more months of custody to make up for the time he was AWOL after he walked away from the Stan Daniels Healing Centre, a 72-bed community residential healing lodge for conditionally released and federally sentenced Indigenous inmates.

The offender, who can’t be named because he was only 17 when he sexually assaulted a woman and cut her throat, is facing several more months of custody to make up for the time he was AWOL after he walked away from the Stan Daniels Healing Centre, a 72-bed community residential healing lodge for conditionally released and federally sentenced Indigenous inmates. The man was convicted in 2018 and sentenced in December of that year to a three-year Intensive Rehabilitative Custodial Supervision order (IRCS) and two years probation on charges of sexual assault, break and enter to commit sexual assault, threats to cause death and unlawful confinement.

Assaulting a police officer with a urine-soaked T-shirt has earned a Brocket man a short stint behind bars. Jonah Shining Double pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of assaulting a peace officer, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Court was told Shining Double was arrested about midnight May 26, 2020 for causing mischief at a residence in Brocket. Police officers arrested him and placed him in a cell, where Shining Double began screaming, dancing and punching the wall. An officer entered the cell to help Shining Double or determine what was wrong with the prisoner, but Shining Double shoved a urine-soaked shirt in the officer’s face and began fighting with him, as well as a second officer who entered the cell shortly afterward.

A Calgary man has been convicted of importing more than 50 kilograms of methamphetamine into Canada at a southern Alberta border crossing.
Asif Mir, 41, was convicted Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court of importing methamphetamine into Canada and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
