Man charged with multiple counts

DECATUR COUNTY – A local man has been arrested on multiple charges. According to information made public by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11:50 p.m. Sunday the Decatur County Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call about a protective order violation occurring in the 3500 block of CR 60 SW. I t was reported that registered sex offender William Joseph Zapfe was attempting contact with a female who had a protective order against him, had made entry into the home, and was physically attacking the female. The suspect was still inside the home when deputies arrived. After ensuring that the female and children inside the residence were safe and secured, units requested assistance from the Greensburg Police Department to attempt to take the male into custody.

A former part-time Southwest Greensburg policeman ordered to stand trial in Westmoreland County last month on an official oppression charge is facing multiple criminal complaints in Fayette County. Last week, James Edward Shaw, 54, of Mt. Pleasant Township waived his right to preliminary hearings on multiple criminal charges of false imprisonment of a minor, harassment, reckless endangerment, simple assault and four counts of illegal use of wire communications while working as a Connellsville School District police officer in 2020. According to documents filed by Connellsville police Detective Lt. Thomas Patton, the mother of a high school student filed a complaint with police over Shaw’s treatment of her son “for a vaping violation” as the youth was walking to meet his ride after classes at the vocational technical school Oct. 16.

Greensburg hires new police officer

The Greensburg Police Department has a new member. Patrol officer Shelby Hubert was sworn in via Zoom this week during a virtual city council meeting. Hubert previously worked part time at the Frazer Township Police Department, according to Greensburg Capt. Shawn Denning. Her salary will be $52,000 a year. Hubert’s hiring is part of an ongoing roster shuffle at the department to replace two recent vacancies. Former police Chief Chad Zucco retired last year, and Sgt. John Swank died in September after a cardiac event caused by a rare disease. Former Capt. Robert Stafford was promoted to chief, with former Lt. Shawn Denning becoming the new captain.
