This column used to present a âbest and worst of the yearâ reckoning. Ten years ago, we declared a young Jeremiah Elbel the artist of the year. That honor was won by impressing us with bold paintings, often using tar as paint. The top painting in his repertoire, which was shown at Steven Vail Fine Arts, was called âCrowd Study 19.â After showing at Vail, it traveled to London, where it has been shown at various galleries and museums for 10 years. Last month, Vail announced it had returned home.
Because my contact with Elbel in those 10 years was restricted to seeing him in restaurants where he worked, and because âCrowd Study 19â is a painting of the people watching Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Lorraine Motel balcony as he was assassinated, I asked Elbel if I could visit his studio on MLK Day this year.

Day & Night Cereal Bar, a Los Angeles import that specializes in breakfast cereal–based treats, is opening a Greenwood Park Mall location in February. Chicken Salad Chick is expanding into Central Indiana with a location planned for the Fishers District. The chain restaurant is based in the deep south, turning this ladies-who-lunch staple into the central reason for the place to exist. There are all kinds of different chicken salad flavors named after real people in founder Stacey Brown’s life. Some contain fruits and nuts, while others are spicy with Buffalo sauce. Of course, Chicken Salad Chick will be happy to cater your fancy brunch, too.

CHAOS erupted during a quiet day at a mall in Durban on Friday (15 January).
This comes after a group of men broke into a jewellery store in Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga, north of Durban.
Shoppers were seen ducking for cover trying to save their lives as they heard the loud noise of glass breaking.
A shopper told Daily Sun she had gone to buy stationery at the mall.
She said when she walked pass the jewellery store, she saw a group of men storming into the store.
“I then ducked for cover and crawled to a much safer area. Other people around me also ducked for cover. It was like a movie,” she said.
Ontario residents dealt with their first day under a stay-at-home order Thursday, while federal officials warned that access to vaccines in Canada will remain a challenge until at least April.
Kristen Bones was at an outdoor rink at Toronto s Greenwood Park at about noon, when a few dozen people laced up their skates and hit the ice.
“You really don’t know what the restrictions are. It’s kind of confusing to us,” Bones said about a lack of clarity around Ontario’s new COVID-19 rules.
