SMITHFIELD – With more than a foot of snow already piling up in February, Greenville residents will soon be seeing more of the Greenville General, which is named by Emma Casazza who won the town’s Snowplow Essay Competition.
Casazza, 11, and three other Smithfield youths submitted an essay for the competition, which asked for a brief explanation of the history of the Smithfield neighborhood where they live.
As the winner, Casazza will name a Greenville snowplow the Greenville General. Casazza said she was inspired by Gen. Nathanael Greene, wanting a rhyming or alliterate name for the truck.
For the essay, Casazza said she brainstormed interesting historic topics about Greenville, researching each.

GREENVILLE Darke County Endowment for the Arts annually grants funds to local organizations, individuals and governmental units which apply for funds to further the arts in our community; the deadline for applications to be considered for funding is Friday, Apr. 30.
To be eligible to receive funding, an applicant must be located in or provide services in Darke County, Ohio. In the past, applicants who have been awarded grants used the funds to assist presentation of art exhibits, musical programs, or dance projects, and to provide special opportunities for arts education. Other projects appropriate for consideration may include innovative plans and programs that increase the quality and stature of the arts, that increase accessibility to the arts for more residents, that enable collaboration between arts groups, that provide recognition of exceptional artistic achievements, and that provide for the maintenance and development of art facilities.
Rhode Island Seasonal Wildlife Solution Sessions Announced
PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Division of Fish & Wildlife will host a series of four Seasonal Wildlife Solution Sessions beginning next month. Rhode Islanders are invited to join DEM’s Wildlife Outreach Team to discover effective strategies for coexisting with our native wildlife. Sessions are designed to address common seasonal conflicts between humans and wildlife and provide the public with guidance. Each session will cover the life history of the focal species, rules and regulations, solutions, and research being done in our state, and will include a dedicated time for questions. The winter and spring sessions will be presented virtually.

BY SUSAN HANAFEE – Two artists new to Boca Grande will be joining favorites Johan Bjurman and John Mitchell Sr. as the men put on their masks and raise their brushes for the third annual Guys Art Show next week.
The show opens Friday, January 22, at the Boca Grande Art Alliance from noon to 5 p.m. and continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We are excited to team up with these very talented artists, Val Chapko and Joe Palmerio,” says Mitchell. “Both of these men are highly regarded in their fields, and it will be a treat to have their works on display and available for purchase at the island’s art center.”
