Gale Ganey Morgan
LELAND Gale Ganey Morgan, 78, passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice after a recent series of medical setbacks following a hip replacement.
Originally from Leland, she resided in Wilmington and Kernersville before returning to Leland, where she eventually retired from Almont Shipping. Family and faith were the core of her being; her love of both formed the guiding principles of her life. She served as well as volunteered in various positions and committees at Sunset Park Baptist Church, Wilmington, and Edgewood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem.
An outgoing personality, Gale loved nothing more than spending time and laughing with family and friends. Gale’s mind was always inquisitive and curious about the world around her. This curiosity manifested itself in a love of travel throughout the United States with her husband, Cam. Gale was an avid reader, gardener, amateur chef and always wanted to try something new.
Gene Aubrey Deters
WILMINGTON Mr. Gene Aubrey Deters, 86, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. He was born March 11, 1934, in Galveston, Texas, to Arthur Deters and Elsie Steele Deters.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lina Anna (Ullrich) Deters; son, Dwight Deters; sister, Cecile Zarrillo; and two brothers, Delbert Deters and Don Deters.
Mr. Deters is survived by his son, Donald Deters, and his wife, Marcela, of Wilmington; and brother, Harold Deters of Garner.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Wilmington.
Richard Glenn ‘Rick’ Sachariat Sr.
WAKE FOREST Richard Glenn “Rick” Sachariat Sr., 75, unexpectedly passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at his home. Rick was born Jan. 21, 1945, in Holyoke Massachusetts, to Frank and Betty Sachariat.
When Rick was very young, his family moved to the family farm in Apple Creek Ohio, where he graduated from Waynedale High School. Rick then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969, where he served our country in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967. He served as a staff sergeant, where he worked in field artillery, qualifying as a sharpshooter.
In his earlier years, Rick enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, Ricky, and ensured his family had a respect for guns and their safety. He was a devoted father and husband who always put his family first.
Thomas Arthur ‘Tom’ Getz
WILMINGTON Thomas Arthur “Tom” Getz, 77, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 11, 2020, surrounded by his loving family after a bout with cancer. Thomas was born May 15, 1943, just outside of Philadelphia to the late Fredrick Getz and Elizabeth Brown Henson.
Tom had been a resident of Wilmington for 28 years. He graduated from Radner High School in 1962, and, like his father, attended Penn State University and was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated in 1966 with a degree in home economics and hotel administration. Like many of his classmates after college, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army and went to basic training at Fort Jackson. Following basic training, he deployed to Vietnam in June 1968. Tom worked in Army intelligence as a trained Laotian linguist attached to a small South Vietnamese Army unit.
WILMINGTON David John “Dave” Riggs, 79, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2020.
Dave is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 57 years, Penny Riggs; daughter, Susan Williams of Wilmington; sons, David Riggs, and his wife, Ginger, of Raleigh and Douglas Riggs, and his wife, Elinor, of Lambertville, New Jersey; grandchildren, Luke, Zane, Noah, Makensie, Madelyn, Piper, Benjamin and Drew.
Dave was born in upstate New York, but made Wilmington his home in the early 2000s. Dave’s career path landed him in Clifton Springs, New York, as V.P. of sales at G.W. Lisk, a global leader in industrial solenoids. He was proud president and member of the Clifton Springs Rotary, where he served and helped others serve the local community for many years. The quaint little town of Clifton Springs, New York, is where Dave raised his family and honed his woodworking skills and passion for golf.
