Greenfield School Committee talks construction, choice numbers and communications

GREENFIELD Department of Public Works Director Marlo Warner informed School Committee members and school administrators this week that the Sanderson Street reconstruction project, which will begin in the spring or summer of 2022, will impact Greenfield Middle School.
Speaking to the School Committee during its Wednesday night meeting, Warner said the “major project” that will cost the city $1.5 million will affect everyone on Sanderson Street from Federal to High streets, and then High Street to Parkway Street just below the mountain on which Poet’s Seat Tower sits.

Counselors from six school districts have been trained in a new curriculum to prevent drug and alcohol use and promote the mental health of students, thanks to the Communities That Care Coalition.
Nine counselors from the Greenfield School Department as well as the Gill-Montague, Mohawk Trail, Frontier, Pioneer Valley and Ralph C. Mahar regional school districts returned from April vacation having completed the three-day training that was funded by the Opioid Task Force of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region.
Coalition Coordinator Kat Allen said the PreVenture Program teaches cognitive behavioral skills and motivational techniques to students in small group settings based on their personality types.

GREENFIELD The mayor and finance director presented City Council’s Ways and Means Committee with a proposed fiscal year 2022 operating budget of almost $54.5 million on Thursday night, a 1.1 percent or $593,078 increase over this year.
The presentation is the kickoff to several Ways and Means Committee meetings that will examine the budget line by line and meet with department heads before the five-member committee makes its recommendation to the full council.

GREENFIELD The Greenfield Recorder has received an answer to its public records request for 15 months’ worth of emails between School Committee members.
Shortly after social media lit up in mid-March with comments and concerns about the School Committee chair and vice chair communicating through email, alleging that they have violated Massachusetts Open Meeting Law, among other things, the Recorder’s request was submitted on March 20.
The reporter received a letter 10 business days later from Interim Superintendent Judith Houle of The Management Solution (TMS) the Greenfield School Department is currently paying Houle, TMS President Andrew Paquette (the department’s business manager), two consultants and a communications specialist saying the public records request yielded 32,208 emails.
