Warner Middle School levy passes XENIA Xenia will be getting a new middle school. By 194 votes, residents in the school district unofficially approved a 2.3-mill property tax levy will raise $36.2 million to allow the district to replace the aging Warner Middle School building. It will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $6.71 per month according to district officials. The unofficial results released by the Greene County Board of Elections show 2,142 voted for the levy and 1,948 voted against. Voters in the district also approved the renewal of a permanent improvement levy, 2,483-1,615. The 1.3-mill PI levy, which raises $450,000 annually costs the owner of a $100,000 home $13.16 per year and is not a new tax.

Paragould school board refinances bonds, sets election date

The Paragould School District is continuing to take advantage of falling interest rates. Its board of directors voted this week to accept a bid from Milwaukee, Wisc.-based Robert W. Baird and Company, LLC to refinance $12,610,000 in bonds at 1.96 percent interest. The previous rate was 3.05 percent (from Morgan Stanley), and the refinancing is expected to save the district a total of $1,123,816.76. The bonds, originally issued in 2011 and refunded by Morgan Stanley in 2016, were for the Primary and Oak Grove Middle School construction projects. The board also heard an update on construction of the new high school buildings from Danny McDaniel of Ramson’s Construction. He told the board the interiors of the AgriScience and Junior ROTC facilities are complete. The remaining interior work of the band facility includes hanging the sound panels, caulking, and cleaning. McDaniel said demolition of the old Agri/Junior ROTC building should be complete by about April 21.

Greene County Still Searching For Engineer After Setback

After a special Transportation committee meeting on Monday held at the Greene County Courthouse, members of the committee were informed by acting county engineer Diane Hendricks that the candidate they were preparing to hired had accepted another job. The Greene Prairie Press reports that Hendricks was informed via a letter from the Illinois Department of Transportation last week that Nathan Bullard of Plano had accepted a county engineer position in Alexander County. The board had saved a significant amount of money by attempting to hire Bullard through a service from the Illinois Society with Professional Engineers. The board had hired an outside firm that had they found a suitable candidate, would have cost the county $25,000.
