Syrian farmers live together in peace after equitable access to water for irrigation Format Water scarcity has a negative impact on agricultural and food production in the Syrian Arab Republic. In addition to the burdens accumulated during years of crisis, farmers face challenging production circumstances because of drought and lack of water resources. This water scarcity has led to conflict between neighbours over the fair allocation of water for irrigation. The experience of Youssef Saliba, a farmer and a fruit producer in Durbul village in Rural Damascus, is typical: “I understand that my neighbour has the right to get his or her share of water for irrigation. However, we constantly argue over our shares of water so we can produce a sufficient quantity of fruits to provide enough income for our families.” He added that the farmers in Durbul had never reached an agreement on how to share the very limited water resources in the village, and there was no collective experience

UNICEF rehabilitates sewer networks in Rural Damascus Format Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) work helps protect children and families in Syria against waterborne diseases Rural Damascus, Syria, 27 April 2021- Around 80,000 people in areas across Rural Damascus have long suffered from overflowing sewer networks in their neighbourhoods. The impact of years of conflict and economic hardship has driven considerable population movement from the capital Damascus to rural areas like Alasad suburb and the conflict-ravaged city of Irbeen, which created massive pressure on already stretched WASH services, including sewer systems. As a result, these suburbs have repetitively witnessed harmful floods from blocked sewage networks costing residents material losses and posing threats to their health.

In Syria, Israeli warplanes targeted the positions of regime and pro-Iran militia forces in retaliation for a surface-to-air missile fired from Syria that exploded in Israeli airspace. Elsewhere, the Balad Airbase in Sala Al Din and Camp Victory inside the Baghdad International Airport were targeted by an unidentified group’s rocket fire. Lastly, East Jerusalem was the scene of heightened tensions as police forces clashed with Israeli far-right Lehava members and ultra-Orthodox Jews, as well as Palestinians.
