Rep Tom Tiffany: COVID and our kids – there s a better way to keep students safe and in school

The Ingraham Angle guest host says unscrupulous and greedy teachers unions are to blame. The test results are in. Consensus is building that America’s students should be back in the classroom. From the American Academy of Pediatrics, who pushed for a return to in-person learning in June, to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Director Robert Redfield, who called schools one of the safest places [kids] can be, government officials are finally beginning to acknowledge what a growing body of science has shown for a long time: Our kids need to be in school. Unfortunately, this hard-fought victory was just a midterm quiz. Policymakers from the U.S. House to the schoolhouse now face an all-important final exam if they want to make the grade: Reforming overzealous contact tracing and quarantine protocols that are keeping too many healthy students out of class, too many doctors and nurses off of the front line, and too many working-class parents stuck at home instead of earning pa

Opinion | Kamala Harris Deserves a More Important Job

Dec. 15, 2020 I was speaking recently to Matt Dunne, founder of the Center on Rural Innovation, which promotes digital economic development in small-town America, and he was telling me about a Vermont community near his home with a great public library: “You could drive by on any Sunday and the parking lot would be full,” he said. “There was just one problem: The library was closed on Sundays.” The parking lot was full of cars with kids doing their homework and adults doing their office work using the wireless connectivity spilling out of the empty building because their rural homes lacked high-speed broadband. Alas, stories abound of rural Americans going to Subway sandwich shops and Dairy Queens in search of free Wi-Fi.

DeSoto County migrant farm families lack basic digital access

The migrant farmer families who live at Casa San Juan Bosco in DeSoto County work year-round to put food on Floridians’ tables. Oranges, tomatoes and strawberries are the main produce they provide, and they do it for a median income of $18,000 a year. The affordable housing community, hosted by Catholic Charities, helps the 426 residents afford to live a sustainable life, even though they make low wages.  Before COVID-19, both parents in the households often went to work while their children went to school and participated in Catholic Charities’ after-school programs, which were suspended this year because of the pandemic. Even though DeSoto schools have reopened, many of the families don t feel safe sending their children to in-person learning, so one parent often stays home to oversee virtual schooling. This cuts their income in half and presents new challenges.
