Northland. The feed situation is just average though. A lot of cows are going to the works. It is the time of year for culling. There have been several farm sales in the district. Even farms that have been on the market for a while are changing hands. The bigger ones are staying in dairy but our contact says buyers are diversifying into vegetables, forestry and even peanut growing.

Pukekohe there has been rapid growth in crops with warm days prevailing but lettuce growers were not amused by their crops failing to develop tight hearts. Mid week the weather turned and a cold front delivered heavy rainfall with lower temperatures. Storage sheds are full of large onions. The smaller ones have been heading to an uncertain European market.

The brainchild of Central Hawke s Bay showjumper Claire Wilson, the CHB Winter Olympics is an annual fixture that just keeps growing.
The event, a showjumping competition with a big fun factor, began in 2010 as a fundraiser for Fleminton School, where Claire and Simon s two children now both at college spent their primary school years.
More recently the Winter Olympics has branched out into fundraising for local charities, Hawke s Bay Rescue Helicopters, HB Cancer Society, Rural Support Trust and this year, Kids Can, with all funds going to support Hawke s Bay children in need.
The Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of the New Zealand Department of Conservation s Great Walks. After competing in Auckland’s Gumboot Marathon raising just under $23,000 for Melanoma NZ and Rural Support Trust, Keeys said he had been itching to find another opportunity to give back. It was Williams who suggested a run to raise funds to buy school and sport shoes for low socio-economic communities. Teaming up with the Salvation Army, Williams then thought “why not take the gumboot concept a step further and go barefoot”. The schoolmates spent more than three months training every weekend barefoot on different treks across the Waikato in preparation.
