A father-of-three suffered a broken skull and stab wounds after was attacked with an axe when he rushed to his neighbour s aid during a terrifying home invasion.
Russell Irwin, 41, was roasting marshmallows with his family when he heard the petrified screams of his female neighbour coming from her home in Cranbourne North, Melbourne, at about 7.15pm on Monday.
Three men had stormed into her house armed with an axe, machete and gun.
Mr Irwin jumped over the fence and ran to his neighbour’s aid before the intruders turned on him.

Shop break-ins investigated
A MAN who broke into a chemist, automotive shop, and bottle shop over the New Year period is wanted by police.
Police believe a man broke into and stole tools from an automotive store on Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Clyde North, on 29 December. The next night the man broke into a bottle shop on South Gippsland Hwy, Cranbourne North, and stole multiple boxes of alcohol.
Police also believe the man broke into a chemist on New Year’s Day.
Police said in a statement that the man is “believed to be Caucasian in appearance, aged between 35 to 50-years-old, and was driving a blue 1998-2005 Holden Astra CD 5 door model with nil plates. On each occasion the man was wearing a distinctive blue and grey cap with a red emblem and reflective rims.”
Police are seeking a man in a distinctive hat following a spate of burglaries.

The following evening, it’s believed the same man gained entry to a bottle shop on the South Gippsland Hwy, Cranbourne North and stole numerous boxes of alcohol.

CCTV captured a man walking across a home s front yard onto the porch in Cranbourne North in Melbourne on Sunday at midday.
He was then caught on film snatching a pair of $150 Nike Air Force One runners that were sitting outside the front door.
