Magnitude 5.9 earthquake shakes Reno-Tahoe region

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 shook the Northern Nevada and Northern California region Thursday afternoon.
The earthquake struck at 3:49 p.m. Its epicenter was 20 miles southwest of Smith Valley, Nevada. It was followed by a dozen aftershocks, with at least one with a 4.6 magnitude, the USGS said.
The earthquake was felt in areas as far away as Sacramento and the Bay Area.
Reno City Hall was evacuated after the earthquake, said Mayor Hillary Schieve. It shook pretty good, Schieve said.
U.S. 395 southbound was closed at the Nevada-California board near Topaz Lake following a rock slide, according to the California Highway Patrol. Northbound lanes were closed at U.S. 395 and State Route 182 in California.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) â An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 rattled the California-Nevada border Thursday afternoon, with people reporting feeling the shaking hundreds of miles away, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.
The earthquake struck at 3:49 p.m. in a region about 250 miles (402 kilometers) east of San Francisco and south of Lake Tahoe. Its epicenter was 4 miles (6.5 km) west-southwest of Walker, a California town of fewer than 900 residents. It was followed by dozens of aftershocks, with at least a half-dozen of magnitude 4.0 or greater, the USGS said.
