Man suspected of killing Iowa trooper pleads not guilty May 17, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail GRUNDY CENTER, Iowa (AP) A man suspected of fatally shooting an Iowa State Patrol trooper during a violent standoff last month has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in the case. Michael Lang, 41, of Grundy Center, was set to appear in court Monday on charges of first-degree murder, assault on a peace officer and attempted murder for the April 9 killing of Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith during a standoff at Lang’s home. Instead, Lang’s attorney filed a written plea Sunday, the Des Moines Register reported.

By Dave Bohl May 17, 2021 (Black Hawk County, Iowa) The man facing charges in the death of an Iowa State Trooper last month is pleading not guilty. Court documents show Michael Lang s attorney filed the not guilty plea paperwork on Sunday and notes that Lang is requesting a speedy trial. Lang is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, in the Grundy Center standoff that led to the death of Sergeant Jim Smith. Police say on April 9th, Lang barricaded himself in his house and fired repeatedly at officers trying to end the standoff, shooting and killing Smith in the process.
