Getting out of the culture wars The court decision against the Tavistock clinic has reignited the battle over trans rights. Paul Demarty looks at the confusion The vexed question of transgender rights has once again flared up, with a high court judgment against the only NHS clinic dedicated to helping young adults and children with gender dysphoria. The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), run from London’s Tavistock and Portman NHS trust, has long been subject to controversy - hardly surprising, given that it is sitting at the centre of a decreasingly reasonable culture-war issue. Its work has faced a serious setback with this ruling, which considerably restricts the terms under which young people can consent to particular treatments. Foremost among those treatments is ‘puberty blockers’, which seek to delay the development of secondary sexual characteristics, to make future gender transitioning easier for patients.

New Victorian legislation is concerning in light of UK High Court ruling10/12/2020|5min Tasmanian Senator Claire Chandler says it is “concerning” Victoria put forward a bill to criminalise discussion of any alternative treatment to gender-change while the UK High Court ruled children cannot change gender without their parents’ consent. Ms Chandler spoke of the legal case of Kiera Bell, a 23-year-old woman who was prescribed puberty blockers at the age of 16. The UK High Court found that children were unable to understand the consequences of such “life-altering treatments” and raised serious questions about whether they can truly consent to them, Ms Chandler said.

Activist and author Cyrus Krohn appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight to discuss H.B. 2288, which is currently in committee in Washington State. It deals with the establishment of school-based health centers. This bill will provide easy access to confidential physical and mental health services that children aged 13 and older can access without their parents’ consent. The age of consent for obtaining health care services was lowered to 13 in a bill that went into effect in January of 2020. According to the fact sheet from the Washington State Health Care Authority: According to Washington law, a minor who is 13 years old or older may initiate an evaluation and treatment for outpatient and/or inpatient mental health services, substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, or withdrawal management without parental consent. The minor has the right to receive services in the least restrictive setting. A youth is admitted for inpatient treatment only if the professional in charge of the facil
