Horizon Europe: the world’s most ambitious research and innovation programme at the service of society
On 2 February, the European Commission announces its plans for the launch of Horizon Europe, its next R&D programme. In this essay for Science|Business, Commissioner Mariya Gabriel restates the broad goals of the programme.

There remain many administrative and legal steps still to complete before any of the €95.5 billion budget can start flowing to researchers and innovators around the EU. The campaign for a bigger and better-balanced EU research programme was long and filled with an uncertainty that was exacerbated by Brexit drama and a global pandemic. But now Horizon Europe is ready to start next year - shy of a formal endorsement by the EU Council and the European Parliament.
Technically speaking, money won t start flowing from the new programme for some weeks, because a lot of legal paperwork needs completing, Commission officials say. In the meantime, the Commission is disbursing funds authorised under the old programme, Horizon 2020.

EURATOM research and training programme: Council reaches political agreement
Member states ambassadors today reached a political agreement on the proposed regulation establishing the research and training programme of the European Atomic Energy Community for the period 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025 (hereafter the regulation ). The aim of the regulation is to pursue nuclear research and training activities with an emphasis on the continuous improvement of nuclear safety, security and radiation protection, as well as to complement the achievement of Horizon Europe’s objectives.
The total financial envelope for the implementation of the new Euratom programme for the period from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025 shall be €1.38 billion in current prices. The indicative break down of that envelope by field of activity shall be as follows:
