LEWISTON With the election just a few months away, a rift has formed within Lewiston’s Democratic Committee.
City Councilor Safiya Khalid, who had been the local party’s vice chair since 2017, took to social media over the weekend, describing a recent committee meeting that turned hostile, which she said forced her to withdraw her candidacy to lead the party.
“Democrats usually pride ourselves on being inclusive, welcoming, and open-minded, but what took place in that meeting was completely awful,” she said in a Facebook post. The post has since received more than 120 comments and has been shared 28 times.

LEWISTON The City Council appointed Janet Beaudoin to the School Committee on Tuesday after a motion to table the nomination failed.
Beaudoin, a parent of two Lewiston students, will step in for Ward 2 committee member Elgin Physic, who resigned when he became the Lewiston High School boys basketball coach.
After a short application period that ended Monday, the council voted 5-2 on Mayor Mark Cayer’s nomination.
Councilor Alicia Rea made a motion to table the item until the July meeting due to the short notice of the nomination, but it failed 5-2. She said the council received the details on Cayer’s nomination about four hours before the meeting Tuesday.

I encourage my friends, neighbors, and constituents in Lewiston’s Ward 3 to get out and vote in support of the school budget on May 25 at Longley School.
My School Committee colleagues and I worked diligently for nearly two months to create a budget that supports our students and educators. Our budget provides for a historic investment in English Language Learners education, supports higher starting teacher salaries, and begins paying for the Lewiston High School expansion set to open this fall.
These items, along with many others, deserve a yes vote on May 25.
