Town scrambles as Wareham Boys and Girls Club announces pending closure

Madison Czopek Apr 27, 2021 The Wareham Boys and Girls Club will close at the end of this week, following a decision by the organization’s parent company, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. The Wareham Boys and Girls Club provides a variety of community programs, including after-school programs and homework help, that many of the town’s parents and guardians especially those whose jobs keep them at work after school lets out rely on. Officials expressed dismay at the news, and preliminary plans for alternatives to the Boys and Girls Club’s programs were discussed at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on April 27.

Looking back, Rossi said those memories became motivation. “Watching parents and community members rally around to try to make sure that everything was still going to happen for us kids that really inspired me, young, to be able to want to do that as an adult,” Rossi said.  Now, Rossi has a son of her own. He’s been attending Wareham schools since first grade and is currently a sophomore at Wareham High School. According to Rossi, she and her son have been at “the forefront of all the major changes” in the district over the last few years.  “When they split Decas and Minot, he was in that first wave of students who had to handle that adjustment,” Rossi explained. “He was in one of the first waves of kids when they moved the fifth grade to the Middle School, and he was in the first section of eighth graders at the high school.”

Teachers, other staff can choose to sell their personal days back to the district

Madison Czopek Apr 8, 2021 School Committee members approved a personal day buy-back plan for Wareham Public Schools’ staff. In the hopes of minimizing the need for substitute teachers who are in short supply these days  and reducing the number of people who come in and out of schools each day, the School Committee approved a plan to buy back personal days allotted to teachers and other staff members.

A unanimous School Committee vote on April 7 confirmed that all of Wareham’s oldest learners will be back in the classroom on a full-time basis in less than three weeks.  Jeffrey Riley, the state’s commissioner or education, has not yet announced a deadline for when remote instruction would no longer count toward required student learning time hours for high school students. But in March, he announced that remote instruction would no longer count for middle school students after April 28, prompting the district to bring back its students later before that deadline or risk forcing studen
