NASA criticizes China for failing to meet responsible standards regarding space debris management

NASA has criticized China for failing to meet responsible standards after debris from a Chinese rocket likely plunged into the Indian Ocean Saturday night, just west of the Maldives. In a statement Sunday, NASA explained that China and other spacefaring nations need to minimize the risks to people and property on Earth when it comes to re-entries of space objects. It added this is crucial to maximize safety, stability, security, and the long-term sustainability of outer space activities. China s space agency said most of the rocket, a Long March 5B, burned up in the atmosphere. The landing area is located at 72.47° E, 2.5° N and surrounding waters. The vast majority of its parts were burnt up and destroyed during re-entry into the atmosphere.

U S hopes N Korea will engage diplomatically to achieve complete denuclearization: Blinken

America s top diplomat explained that the diplomatic ball is now in North Korea s court, stressing that the Biden administration is focusing on a practical approach that will explore diplomacy with the regime. I hope that North Korea will take the opportunity to engage diplomatically and to see if there are ways to move forward toward the objective of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. And so we ll look to see not only what North Korea says, but what it actually does in the coming days and months. But we have, I think, a very clear policy that centers on diplomacy and it is, I think, up to North Korea to decide whether it wants to engage or not on that basis.

Ireland, France among countries that choose to gradually lift COVID-19 restrictions

Ireland, for instance, has decided to ease restrictions gradually over the coming weeks and months. This follows the highest level of lockdown that has been imposed across the country since Christmas last year, which the BBC has described as (quote) the longest lockdown in the world. From May 10th, close-contact services like hairdressers can reopen while all shops will reopen a week later. The decision comes as the Irish government aims to inoculate over 80 percent of its population with their first vaccine dose and have 55 percent fully immunized by the end of June. The French government is also mulling over plans to ease restrictions implemented as part of the country s third national lockdown at the end of March following a spike in cases.

Fed maintains key interest rate unchanged at 0 00% - 0 25%

The U.S. Federal Reserve decided Wednesday to hold its key interest rate unchanged at a range of zero to a quarter of one percent, while acknowledging recent progress in terms of growth and employment. It adds the rate will be maintained until its goals of maximum employment and two percent inflation are reached over the longer term. (ENGLISH) AP 4323225 / 2 With regard to interest rates, we continue to expect it will be appropriate to maintain the current zero to one quarter percent target range for the federal funds rate until labor market conditions have reached levels consistent with the committee s assessment of maximum employment, and inflation has risen to two percent and is on track to moderately exceed 2% for some time.
